5. How did you end up in the Energy Industry?

Definitely an accident to start, so serendipity, I suppose! I was planning to go into an environmental field or academia, but while getting my M.S. I had an internship opportunity in Lafayette, Louisiana. I truly enjoyed the experience, the work, and the people I worked with. I learned a lot about practical geology. I got hooked, and thought that I might be able to do more environmental good from inside the industry...

6. Why do you like working with Start-Ups?

I love the passion and the innovation attached to start-ups. Being privileged enough to be a part of that kind of atmosphere is energizing!

Okay, now for some fun things about MaryBeth

7. What are three of your interests outside of work?

  • The Green Bay Packers, The Fighting Irish, and The Badgers!

  • Building/creating/making things with my hands.

  • LEGO.

8.  What are your top 3 accomplishments (personal or professional)?  Don’t be shy!  Give ‘em to us.

  • Consistently solving clients' problems, often in unconventional ways.

  • Saving a big sale after just joining a company by upping the customer support they had [not] been receiving, patiently teaching, and building a great relationship. "I'm absolutely not buying this software!" turned into, "Yes please! I'll take two!"

  • I have been terrified but brave enough to try my hand at stand up comedy a few times. People laughed! Yay!

9.  If I were a superhero, my superpower would be              .

Apparition. How amazing would it be to think about being somewhere, turn on the spot, and then be there! No airports required! Yes. Definitely apparition. Oooooh! And being able to cast the Undetectable Extension charm...

10. When I was 5, I was pretty sure I'd be a                 when I grew up.

Professor

11. If I weren't so damn good at what I do now, I'd probably be                 .

A master builder....With LEGO, and also with houses for real people. :^)

12.  My favorite song is               by            .

Pretty much anything by Sting, whether with the Police ("Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" is about me, pretty sure :^D ), solo, or collaborations... But I love music in general so let's dance!

13.  If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd          .

Non-profit company with an arm to donate to multiple causes (e.g. St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Wounded Warriors, Habitat for Humanity) and an arm dedicated to issuing grants and/or very low interest loans to those people that would otherwise be gouged by payday lenders, so that they can work their way out of debt, rather than perpetually creating more, with classes/resources to help people learn how to budget, invest, and save. I would also start a company to create an app so that physical and occupational therapists could dictate their notes easily into the forms they have to fill out so that paperwork is easy, even if one is a perfectionist. PTs and OTs to start. Then totally expand to other medical professionals and other industries as needed....And I would pay myselfto build with LEGO at least 1-2 days/week. :^)

14.  The best piece of advice I've ever been given is                              .

Don't let the hill attack you. You attack the hill. Don't change your pace, don't change your breathing. You will have to adjust your stride. ...Although this advice was given by my cross country coach when I was 16 and really did relate to running hills, I have taken this on as a life philosophy: If there is something in my way, I don't let it mentally defeat me. I will defeat it. I will keep my pace and my breathing steady, and I will adjust my stride to properly attack the "hill" that presents itself. Thanks, Mr. Johnson!
